Semur Betawi

Semur is my favorite dish since I was a toddler because it is sweet and has cinnamon and clove spices in it. My mom prepares it with chicken and eggs. The gravy goes well with porridge too. She never cooks it with meat so when I knew about the Betawi version with meat, I was a little confused but still it was tasty though.

This recipe is from my friends family recipe, they are native Betawi people. Betawi people are the original people of Jakarta deriving from the old name of the city “Batavia”. In older days, the Dutch colonial families like to hold feasts with buffets of various kinds of dishes called “Rijstafel”, one of the dish is this smoor or semur. It can be beef, beef tongue  chicken or eggs to you taste. Most of the Betawi people cook it with beef, so here is the recipe:

Ingredients:
300 gr beef
4 big potatoes
1 lt water
1 tsp salt
4 garlic cloves
1 small onion
2 cm ginger
1/2 tsp pepper
2 tsp corriander powder
1 tsp cumin
2 bay leaves
1 lemon grass
2 cm galangel
1 nutmeg
1 cinnamon stick
1/3 cup sweet soy sauce

How to prepare:
-boil the beef, in the water with salt for 30 minutes
-take out the beef and cut into small cubes
-peel potatoes and cut into small cubes
-add the beef and the potatoes in the soup again and turn on low heat
-grind garlic, onion and ginger into a paste
-fry it until fragant and add into the soup
-add the remaining ingredients and boil for another 15-20 minutes
