Jenang Semut Rangrang

This congee is a very traditional Javanese delight with a cultural value attached to it. Parents will serve this congee to their children on their ‘Neptu’ day. Neptu is the birthday based on the Javanese calender. ‘Semut Rangrang’are those big red ants that you find in tropical countries. The base of the congee is white sticky rice, coconut sugar and light coconut milk.

175 gr white sticky rice grains
600 ml water
6 tbs brown sugar
1 1/2 tbs white sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla powder
1 screw pine leaf

200 ml light coconut milk
1/2 tsp salt

How to prepare:
-wash and drain white sticky rice grain
-boil the sticky rice grain, water, brown sugar, white sugar, and screw pine leaf, stir gently
-after 15-20 minutes add the salt, and vanilla
-cook until you get the porridge consistency, turn off heat

-in a pan with low heat boil the light coconut milk and salt
-turn off heat when the salt has been dissolved
