Nasi Pecel

Nasi Pecel

Serves 2

I think the best tasting ‘nasi pecel’ is those sold in super economy train that travels through central Java. They will carry all the ingredients in a straw basket, hold on top of their head or on one side of their hip. To be honest I prefer gado-gado to pecel because it is more sweet and it doesn’t contain ‘kencur’, an ingredient that I don’t really like but it is very good for your health. Pecel is usually served directly poured on top of rice in small portions with some crackers or rempeyek.

2 long red chili
10 bird eyes chili
250 gr fried peanuts
1 clove garlic
1 lesser galangal/kencur
2 lime leaves
2 tbs brown sugar
1 tsp pitted tamarind, dilute in hot water
1 1/2 tsp salt

How to prepare:
-with a mortar or food processor, grind all the above ingredients into a paste
-this stage is ready for storage
-take 1-2 table spoon and add in a cup, dilute with hot water for every servings

The vegetables consist of
-boiled shredded cabbage
-boiled beansprout
-boiled spinach
-cut cucumber

How to assemble:
-add rice on a plate
-in a bowl combine the vegetables with the peanut sauce, add on top of the rice
-add garlic crackers on top
